Javier A. Lira, MD

Biography

Dr. Javier Lira is a board-eligible internal medicine physician who offers a personalized approach to preventive care, chronic disease management, and whole-person wellness with deep respect for each patient’s individual needs. He also focuses on LGBTQ+ health, men’s health, and modern relationship-based primary care.

He completed his residency at Mount Sinai West/Morningside Hospitals through the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he trained extensively in both inpatient and outpatient medicine. During his time there, he pursued advanced clinical training in LGBTQ+ and gender-affirming care through dedicated rotations at Mount Sinai’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery. There, he managed hormone therapy across the full gender spectrum, performed pre-surgical evaluations, and developed a nuanced understanding of gender-inclusive medical care. In the realm of HIV prevention, Dr. Lira stays current with emerging therapies and is always open to initiating patients on the latest, evidence-based options for PrEP and PEP. Additionally, he trained with specialists in high-resolution anoscopy (HRA), a precision-based tool for anal cancer prevention in high-risk populations.

His clinical interests also include men’s sexual health, obesity and metabolic wellness, cardiovascular disease and prevention, and thyroid disorders. During residency, he gained in-depth experience managing weight and obesity through lifestyle, behavioral, and pharmacologic approaches, and contributed to research in thyroid disease published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Dr. Lira is a member of the American College of Physicians, Endocrine Society, and International Anal Neoplasia Society. Towards the end of his residency training, he was selected to complete Mount Sinai’s GME Healthcare Leadership Program, a multidisciplinary track designed to develop physician-leaders with a focus on systems-based care, effective team management, health equity, and innovation in primary care delivery.

In recognition of his commitment to compassionate, high-quality care, he was awarded the John Graney Excellence in Primary Care Award. He is fluent in Spanish and deeply values building long-term, trusting relationships with patients from all backgrounds.

Originally from South Florida, he enjoys listening to live music, swimming, cooking new and unique dishes, and traveling the world. On weekends, you’ll often find him exercising or exploring the city on foot with his French Bulldog, discovering hidden gems and favorite neighborhood spots.
